Loose tea offers infinitely superior teas for numerous reasons.

The problem with tea bags is that the tea leaves must be broken up resulting in tiny fragments.

On the other hand, loose tea offers unbroken leaves.  Tea leaves contain chemicals and essential oils which generate the wonderful flavors and aromas. When tea leaves are broken up to fit in bags, those powerful oils evaporate which creates listless and tasteless tea. 

Typically, tea bags are filled with tiny crushed and broken leaves which are known as fannings.  Loose teas ordinarily are comprised of whole leaves or large segments of leaves.

Another important factor is that tea leaves need space to expand and open up. Water circulation around the leaves is critical.  Circulation is restricted in tiny tea bags.

In the tea industry, Orange Pekoe teas refer to a basic medium grade black tea consisting of many single tea leaves. A basic bagged Orange Pekoe tea sold in the supermarket is an inferior tasting tea compared to a true whole leaf tea.  Inferior bagged teas typically include fannings and dust which are simply tiny remnants of the sorting and/or crushing process.

Black Keemun or Assam leaves constitute the primary component of most bagged teas.  Higher quality teas of Assam leaves are sold as loose teas.
